Your clients at 85

The number of people in the UK aged over 85 is growing rapidly.

There are currently around 1.5 million people over 85 and this is forecast to grow to 4.3 million by 2040. That means more than 1 in 20 people will be over 85.

So how much do we know about the over 85s?

Their Health

Unfortunately, most people in this age group are suffering from poor health.

In fact, over two thirds have a disability or longstanding illness and around 1 in 4 people over 85 report being in bad health or very bad health.

Life Expectancy

On average, a man aged 85 can expect to live for another 6.6 years and a woman aged 85 can expect to live a further 7.6 years on average.

The longer people live, the longer their projected life expectancy.

Their Care Needs

In 2016, £14 billion was spent paying for individuals’ care needs. And of the 392,000 care home individuals in the independent sector, 171,700 (44%) were self-funders. This rises to 220,100 (56%) if top ups are included.

With only 7% of self-funders taking financial advice, it’s clear the opportunity for qualified advisers to really make a difference to tens of thousands of people and their relatives is immense.
