Fixed term investment: why it helps you better blend retirement solutions

Advisers can help deliver better outcomes, by offering a wider range of options to personalise each client’s journey into and through retirement.

Reasons to recommend the Fixed Term Investment solution

  • Guaranteeing short to medium spending or saving objectives can be met, whilst avoiding locking-in funds unnecessarily, especially when clients often need to retain flexibility to meet lifetime sustainable income and/or legacy objectives.

  • Clients can rest easy in the knowledge that regardless of investment market ups and downs, their Fixed Term Investment plan is guaranteed.

  • Fixed Term Investment is easy to understand. It's held within an on-platform personal pension, where income and/or capital growth is paid gross into the cash account, which means income can be taken tax-efficiently and adapted to meet changes in circumstances.
  • Advisers can use part of their client’s portfolio to provide guaranteed income and/or capital growth at maturity for a fixed-term, while enabling the remaining assets to be optimised in line with investment objectives.

  • Fixed Term Investment integrates seamlessly within an on-platform personal pension, showing a platform value that allows simple integration into ongoing holistic advice and planning. It can be used to meet specific goals such as bridging income to state pension age or supporting de-risking without having to give up potential growth.

  • With Fixed Term Investment, advisers could be better equipped to manage sequencing risk and reduce uncertainty, whilst maintaining growth potential in the rest of the portfolio. It enables advisers to deliver better outcomes, by offering a wider range of options to personalise each client’s journey into and through retirement.

Who is Fixed Term Investment for?

Fixed Term Investment is for those who are:

in semi or early retirement, typically aged 60-67, for whom the solution can be used to bridge an income gap to state pension age.

in the later stages of saving for retirement, typically from age 50, where investors can use Fixed Term Investment to better blend solutions, in an on-platform personal pension, which reduces exposure to investment risks whilst optimising growth potential.

in retirement investors who don’t need immediate income but want to reduce exposure to investment risks by guaranteeing capital growth at maturity for a proportion of their portfolio.

To see the full client suitability criteria, please refer to our Technical Guide.

Which platform is Fixed Term Investment available on?

It’s coming soon alongside our Secure Lifetime Income on the Fundment platform.

Is there any underwriting?

No, we don't medically underwrite Fixed Term Investment.

Is there a death benefit?

If your client dies before the maturity date, Fixed Term Investment may pay a death benefit. It’s calculated as the purchase price minus any income that’s already been paid. If no income has been paid, the death benefit will equal the purchase price. However, no death benefit would be paid if the total income received is more than what your client has paid for the plan.

Can my client use Fixed Term Investment with only part of my pension?

Yes, part of a client’s portfolio can be allocated to Fixed Term Investment to meet specific needs while preserving the flexibility of the rest of the portfolio.

What terms are available?

Fixed Term Investment has three guaranteed options: monthly income, capital growth [lump-sum paid at maturity], or a mix of both. The options are available for fixed-terms of three to 30 years to clients aged 40 to 90 years, provided they’ll be no more than aged 100 on the date the plan matures.

How can I get an indicative or non-guaranteed rate?

Indicative or non-guaranteed quotes can be used to help with planning but cannot be purchased. To generate one, log in to the quote portal and enter your client’s date of birth, address, their desired term and two of three inputs – annual income, purchase price, maturity value. The system will calculate the third input to provide the quote.

Can the Fixed Term Investment solution be used outside of an on-platform personal pension wrapper?

No, Fixed Term Investment is an on-platform solution.
